Universal Basic Income: Undeserved or Unfulfilling?

September 5, 2017

Dr. Ryan Jenkins (Cal Poly)

We face gloomy portents of technological unemployment, the prediction that advances in technology will render people unemployed more quickly…… than we can find new uses for their labor—leaving, perhaps, tens of millions of Americans unemployed in the next few decades. What if these forecasts are correct? A “universal basic income” has been proposed as a response, but are those not working deserving of financial support? I argue that there are grounds for thinking so based on our existing attitudes toward related cases. Others have worried that a world without work would be meaningless, even if our material needs are provided for. I will suggest technological and cultural solutions for avoiding a future wherein technological advance has rendered life meaningless
