Artificial Intelligence: Transcending the Brain?

October 20, 2017

Dr. Susan Schneider (U Connecticut)

We are in the midst of an AI revolution. Artificial intelligence is projected eventually to render us obsolete in the workplace, and even, according to some, eventually outthink us. The age of AI presents philosophers with many issues to mull over: can there truly be conscious AIs? Will there really be human-level AIs (i.e. ‘AGIs’), and beyond? Should humans ‘merge’ with AIs, as technophiles like Elon Musk and Ray Kurzweil envision? In this talk, I will discuss my philosophical work on some of these issues, focusing on machine consciousness in particular, as well as my AI projects with NASA, my patented tests for AI safety and AGI consciousness (with Princeton), and some initial efforts to put AI near Alpha Centauri (in the context of the Hawking/Millner Project, Breakthrough Starshot) and more
