Colloquium Talk: Igal Kvart

November 21, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Igal Kvart (Hebrew University of Jerusalem) will provide a colloquium talk to the UF Philosophy Department in the department library.

Title: Repercussions of Steering Thrust Pragmatics on Assertions, Pragmatic Encroachment, Presuppositions, Common Ground, and Pragmatic Inconsistencies

Abstract: In this second talk, I will rely on the pragmatics I presented in the first talk, though I’ll briefly survey it. Here I will consider its considerable ramifications on the above topics, involving, e.g.: norms of assertion, whether knowledge should be considered with thresholds that vary with stakes, what are ‘presuppositions’ as we use the term unprofessionally and how was it ‘hijacked’ in formal pragmatics; some ramifications on Stalnaker’s pragmatics due to reliance on Grice’s; and a new look on Moorean sentences as pragmatic inconsistencies.
