Colloquium Talk: Avery Archer

October 8, 2021 @ 4:00 pm

Talk Title: What is Agnosticism?

Abstract: The most widely discussed contemporary account of agnosticism is that of Jane Friedman, who conceives of it as a distinct mental state that has a question rather than a proposition as its content. However, Friedman’s view has recently come under fire by Thomas Raleigh, who holds that agnosticism towards some proposition, P, consists in refraining from believing and disbelieving based on one’s evidence. My talk will offer a novel account of agnosticism that is not only immune to the criticisms levelled against Friedman’s account by Raleigh, but that also improves upon both Friedman’s and Raleigh’s views.

Research Bio: Dr. Avery Archer (George Washington University) will be giving the first UF Philosophy Colloquium Talk of the Fall 2021 semester. Dr. Archer specializes in philosophy of mind, philosophy of action, and epistemology. His current research interests include the philosophical analysis of agnosticism and inquiry and he is currently working on a monograph entitled “The Attitude of Agnosticism,” under contract with Cambridge University Press.

Venue: The talk will talk place virtually over Zoom. Participants are asked to register for the talk. After doing so, you will receive a confirmation email with information about joining the meeting.
