Duncan Purves Named UF Research Foundation Professor

Dr. Duncan Purves has been named a UF Research Foundation Professor for his work on the implementation of AI-based decision procedures in law enforcement and military contexts. The guiding aim of his work is to uncover practicable insights that can be incorporated into the design, development, and implementation phases of the technology lifecycle. He has looked particularly closely at (1) the ethical implications of lethal autonomous weapon systems and (2) the use of predictive policing systems by law enforcement. This latter project, titled “Artificial Intelligence and Predictive Policing: An Ethical Analysis” is funded by the National Science Foundation. (Click here for more information about it.)

UF Research Foundation Professors have a distinguished record of research and a strong research agenda that is likely to lead to continuing distinction in their fields. Dr. Purves is one of six CLAS professors to be honored this year. Click here for more information about the award.
